Bachelor of Science in Nursing

Overview

The BSN Program is a 4-year program (120 Credit Hours) that obtained CAA Initial Accreditation to offer the program on 17 February 2021. The program is devoted to improving the health and wellbeing of society by preparing professional nurses that provide high-quality, evidence-based, holistic person-centered care to individuals, families, and communities in the UAE.

Teaching-learning strategies are student-centered that integrate problem-solving and critical thinking within an interactive environment, and achievement of clinical skills competence in a state-of-the-art Simulation Centre before going to the clinical practice. Incorporating the high standards of the nursing professional practice, with an in-depth knowledge of nursing sciences, is a key aim of the program.

Program Mission

Fujairah University will prepare nursing graduates capable of applying best practices, demonstrating ethical behavior, and following a holistic approach to restoring health, preventing illness, and promoting the health of the individual, family, and community.

Program Goals

Nursing graduates will be prepared to be highly competent in all the core competencies according to the Scope of Practice for Registered Nurses, as required by the National Nursing Education Regulatory Bodies.   Furthermore, they will be equipped to comply with the industry’s expectations to enhance employability. Additionally, the BSN Program is committed to serving the rapidly-changing health care needs of the UAE population, aligned with the UAE’s 2021 Vision, and aims to:

  1. Produce competent nurses able to provide quality person-centered nursing care that is culturally sensitive.
  2. Contribute to the development of nursing as a discipline and profession.
  3. Promote a scientific nursing care research culture among faculty and students.
  4. Develop the body of nursing knowledge at the local, regional, and international levels.
  5. Serve the rapidly-changing health care needs of individuals, families, communities, and society-at-large.

Program Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program, the students will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate a sound knowledge of the essential concepts and theories related to the nursing practice.
  2. Perform nursing procedures, and operate technology and health information systems skillfully in the delivery of optimal nursing care to individuals, families and communities.
  3. Implement professional behavior consistent with the code of ethics, as well as effective communication strategies to deliver optimal holistic person-centered care to individuals, families, and communities.
  4. Apply the nursing process, supported by evidence-based practice, to develop a holistic nursing care plan that ensures safe, culture-sensitive nursing care.
  5. Develop a research proposal and disseminate research findings to enhance the nursing practice.
  6. Differentiate amongst different quality improvement interventions to resolve clinical nursing practice problems through innovation and entrepreneurship.
  7. Demonstrate leadership skills during collaboration with health care providers in the delivery of quality health care services to the individuals, families and communities.

This course offers nursing students concepts in human anatomy and physiology, from cellular to organism level highlighting the integration of bodily systems in maintaining health. Themes include the musculoskeletal system, the nervous system, and the endocrine system. Students explore anatomical and physiological concepts through lectures, discussions, concept mapping, video presentations, critical thinking exercises, problem-solving activities, and virtual reality lab sessions. Medical Terminology

This course is an introduction to the principles of medical terms construction, necessary in the vocabulary used in health care settings. Medical terms related to different body systems, diseases, surgical procedures and treatment are part of the learning content. Medical terminology commencing with prefixes, suffixes and word roots are covered in this course. Students explore concepts through lectures, discussions, concept mapping, critical thinking exercises and problem solving activities. By the end of the course students will be equipped with the principles of analyzing spelling, and pronouncing medical terms associated with different body systems.

The course provides students with an overview of biochemical reactions in the human body. It explores the structure, function, and metabolism of biological molecules, including carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, enzymes, hormones, and nucleic acids. NUR-2212 Therapeutic Communication (2-0-2) 

This course aims to explain the principles of therapeutic communication as an essential dimension of nursing care.  This will include the development of communication skills in building interpersonal relationships, establishing therapeutic relationships with patients, and collaborating with other members of the healthcare team. Students will develop therapeutic communication skills by learning through scenario-based examples, critical thinking questions, discussion, and writing assignments on a health education plan. By the end of this course, students will be required to demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of therapeutic communication concepts, enabling them to employ therapeutic communication effectively in patient care as professional nurses.

This course examines how internal and external stressors cause physiological changes and pathological responses in the body, leading to disease symptoms, and explores the fundamental pathophysiology of common health problems. It equips students with the appropriate ways to investigate cases and their solutions. In this regard, the students capture the underlying basic and complex care strategies necessary to mitigate any form of pathophysiological cases. Using case studies, case analysis, and assignments, the student would recognize the pathogenesis of various diseases affecting body systems.

By the end of this course, the student will determine the alterations in normal body functions secondary to the disease process based on clinical manifestation.

This course equips students with the essential knowledge and skills to perform a health assessment for an individual patient. They implement the physical examination techniques, which include inspection, palpation, percussion, and auscultation. This course is designed to equip nursing students with the essential knowledge and competencies to address clients’ physiological, psychological, and social needs through individualized person-centered care applying contemporary nursing practices. The course focuses on developing competencies in the nursing process, including assessment, diagnosis, planning, implementation and evaluation. Students will develop a comprehensive and quality nursing plan to integrate essential care principles of hygiene, skincare, nutrition, oxygenation, urinary and bowel elimination, activity, and exercise.  Students will engage in lectures, the Socratic method, flipped classroom and simulation, to develop competencies in nursing care, patient assessment and ethical decision-making. By the end of the course, the students will be able to comprehend basic human needs, demonstrate basic nursing skills and documentation, apply standard precautions and integrate safety and ethics into nursing care .

Emergency and Disaster Nursing

NUR-2332 Emergency and Disaster Nursing (2-0-2)

This course provides a critical understanding of the nature of emergency nursing and the roles of nurses in mitigating emergency cases. It equips students with the appropriate methods for investigating cases and their solutions. In this regard, the students capture the underlying basic and complex care strategies necessary to mitigate any form of emergency cases that are experienced by the individual, group, and institutions in the community. Using case studies, video presentations and assignments, the student would recognize the importance of disaster as a public health problem and appreciate the role of the nurse in disaster management. By the end of this course, the student will get acquainted with disaster and emergency planning and decision-making during acute tropical disasters.
